DAY 1. OAXACA.
Arrival in Oaxaca City, transfer to your hotel. At the scheduled time, we will begin our visit to the city of Cantera Verde, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The City Walk is a tour that will allow you to get to know the center of Oaxaca. Begin by visiting the two most famous markets, 20 de Noviembre and Benito Juárez, where you will find a wide variety of typical foods and regional products. We will continue the tour by visiting the Zócalo and the Cathedral, until we reach the Temple of Soledad, Patron Saint of the City. Next to the Plaza de los Danzantes, we will enjoy delicious regional ice cream. We will visit a chocolate factory to learn about the grinding process and the different ways of preparing it. We will conclude the tour by walking along the tourist walkway where you can see several shops, restaurants, museums, and galleries, until we reach the Temple of Santo Domingo, a showcase of Mexican Baroque. Return to the hotel. Includes regional ice cream. Accommodation.
DAY 2. MONTE ALBÁN – ARRAZOLA- CUILAPAM – COYOTEPEC
Breakfast at the hotel. At the agreed-upon time, we will meet in the lobby to begin our visit to Monte Albán, the most important archaeological site in Oaxaca, located 30 minutes away. In this architectural complex, you will see the Central Plaza. This space constitutes the heart of Monte Albán and is surrounded by the main buildings, such as the ball court, the south platform, the dancers' plaza, the observatory, and others. We recommend wearing a hat, scarf, and sneakers. We will continue our journey to Arrazola, where you will be captivated by the wonderful figures carved and hand-painted by Oaxacan artisans. The alebrijes are a blend of color and strength in their figures.
We take some time to rest and enjoy a delicious buffet lunch featuring various regional dishes (food not included). We continue our tour with a stop at a place steeped in legend and literally alive in its architecture: the former convent of Cuilapam de Guerrero, the site where the leader Vicente Guerrero was executed in 1831. It also holds countless stories to tell. Finally, we visit San Bartolo Coyotepec, where the famous "black clay" pottery is produced. The pieces are molded and decorated using burnishing and casting techniques, then fired in an underground kiln. Return to the city and overnight stay.
DAY 3 TULE – MITLA ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE – BOILS THE WATER – CANDLE WORKSHOP – TEOTITLÁN DEL VALLE – MEZCAL FACTORY
Breakfast at the hotel. Be ready at the agreed-upon time in the lobby to begin our tour. We will first stop at the Tule tree, a wonderful example of Oaxaca's vast natural wonder. After an approximately 1.5-hour drive, we will contemplate a true natural wonder: the petrified waterfalls of "Hierve el Agua," a striking setting with sulfurous waters and endless displays of colorful landscapes. It is made up of a series of petrified waterfalls characterized by their white color and immensity (they measure over 200 meters in height). They were formed millions of years ago by the flow of carbonated water, whose current originates in the springs at the top of the ravine.
We'll descend to visit the archaeological site better known as the City of the Dead, characterized by its walls filled with fretwork pressed together without any glue. It also features a town that blends religious conquest with Aztec traditions and a handicraft market. On our way back, we'll stop for lunch at a restaurant with a buffet menu to sample regional dishes (food not included).
We'll continue our tour to visit our first artisan, where she'll explain how to make candles used for important events like engagements, weddings, and wakes. We'll have the opportunity to make our own wax concha. We'll then continue on to a mezcal distillery, a unique beverage in the state steeped in tradition in its production and consumption. You'll learn about the extraction and fermentation processes and be immersed in the unparalleled work of the artisans who make this beverage.
Finally, we visit Teotitlán del Valle, a town renowned for its wool rug making. We'll see the wool carding, dyeing, and loom work, as well as how a rug of this quality can take anywhere from six months to a year to make. Return to the hotel. Overnight stay.
DAY 4 GUELATAO – MOLINILLOS – CALPULALPAM
After breakfast at the hotel, we'll meet in the lobby for a tour through the mountains to San Pablo Guelatao. This town is famous for being the birthplace of Benemérito de las Américas, Don Benito Juárez García. We'll delve into the history of this great Oaxacan icon. At the end of the tour, we'll head into the mountains to visit our first artisan dedicated to making the wooden mills used to make chocolate. As our final stop, we'll head to Capulálpam de Méndez, a town nestled in the Sierra Juárez mountains, designated a Magical Town by UNESCO in 2010. You'll have lunch at a restaurant located in the mountainous terrain (food not included).
Here we'll be at the tourist community center. In this beautiful Sierra location, you can't miss the opportunity to rappel, climb, zipline, take the incredible cave tour where you'll engage all your senses, and many more ecotourism activities. In the afternoon, we'll return to the hotel. You can rest in the van as we'll have to descend the Sierra to return to our hotel on a 1.5-hour drive. Return to our hotel. Overnight stay.
Day 5: OAXACA / MEXICO
After breakfast at the hotel, you'll have free time for personal activities until your transfer to the Oaxaca City airport for your return flight.
